Release of the Okanagan Charter
We are very pleased to be releasing the Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting Universities and Colleges.
The Charter, a text-only version and other conference documents are being hosted on UBC’s open access digital repository, cIRcle: https://open.library.ubc.ca/cIRcle/collections/53926.
The Charter is an outcome of the 2015 International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges held in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The Charter development process engaged researchers, practitioners, administrators, students and policy makers from 45 countries.
We invite you to use and disseminate the Charter within your campuses, communities, networks and regions. The Charter document contains pictures that reflect Charter values “people, place, planet” in terms of the location where the Conference was hosted. When you translate the Charter for use in your context, please change the pictures as needed to fit. A text-only version will be available soon.
A press release is available for you to use and adapt as needed for your context.
The Conference Planning Committee and Charter Working Group will continue to work on next steps in launching the Charter in the short term. We’re envisioning the formation of a new committee or working group to support longer term activation and mobilization of the Charter, including outlining ways that higher education institutions and community, governmental and non-governmental organizations can endorse and/or sign-on to the Charter. Other Charter mobilization opportunities will be considered and pursued based on the pre-conference survey responses as well as ideas that emerged at the conference.
Many who participated in the Charter development and the Conference expressed interest in finding ways to maintain our present momentum through building and expanding networks and a future conference series. Please click on this link if you would like to indicate your interest in receiving updates or being involved in any of these activities. We hope plans for a next conference (following from the 2015 Conference/ VII International Congress) will be announced soon – several countries have expressed interest in hosting.
Through global contribution and collaboration, we have created a Charter that will guide and inspire health promotion action within higher education for years to come.
